Our Society holds several
meetings for 2012 and an Annual Show, in September to feature the efforts and rewards of area gardeners. Meetings are held in rooms 3 and 4 (the exception -- meeting rooms 1 and 2 for the annual Tuber Sale in April). The Show is held at the Royal Botanical Gardens -- location finder. For the 2011 Show Winners go to the Blooms page.
Our annual show of Chrysanthemum and Dahlia blooms is held at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Hamilton. Our 2012 show dates are: Saturday, September 8th and Sunday, September 9th, 2012. The 2011 Dahlia of the Year was Betty O'Brien, introduced by Malachy Byrne. No special variety has been chosen for 2012 yet.
Visitors are more than welcome to come see the shows which open to the public at 1 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday. Location map. We have an auction of show blooms at 3 p.m. on the Sunday, so visitors can take some beautiful bouquets home to that special person.
We will hold our annual Tuber Sale and Auction on April 16, 2012 at the Royal Botanical Gardens. This is one of two fund-raising events for the Society. The other way we raise funds is through a tuber sale to be held in conjunction with the Royal Botanical Gardens Auxiliary Sale at the R.B.G. Arboretum in May. Visitors may purchase dahlia tubers at this sale. Many of them are from prize-winning stock and a few are one-of-a-kind. Gardeners will also be able to speak to dahlia members on how to plant, pinch, debud, grow and care for dahlias during the year.
Our Society is a member of the American Dahlia Society
and as such has hosted several district and national show competitions, with growers coming from all parts of Eastern Canada and the Northern United States. It is not uncommon to see upwards of 2,000 blooms on the show benches. These shows are open for viewing to the general public with growers available to answer questions in regards to the blooms on display. At the end of the show, the blooms are auctioned off to raise funds for our Society.
Whether you are a novice or an experienced grower, our Show offers a class for each and every chrysanthemum and dahlia that is grown today.
