The April 20, 2009 meeting, is our annual Tuber Sale and Auction. Visitors, members and friends can purchase dahlia tubers, at less than retail cost, during the auction, where there are prize-winning stock and some one-of-a-kind varieties.
Meeting dates for 2009 are: March 9, April 20, May 11, June 8 and October 5th. The meetings are all being held on Monday evenings and start at 7 p.m.
Anyone is welcome to attend our meetings and there is no admission to hear various speakers and learn about the culture of chrysanthemums and dahlias. We do not hold meetings during the months of July, August, September, November, December, January or February. The Society members like to plan an awards dinner in November.
We will participated in the R.B.G. Auxiliary Sale at the R.B.G. Arboretum in May 2009. Shoppers can purchase dahlia tubers and cuttings of various varieties at the sale. Of course there is a limited number of stock available, so people should come early for the best selection.
Our annual show of Chrysanthemum and Dahlia blooms will be held at the Dundas Lions Memorial Community Center. Our show dates are: Saturday, September 12th and Sunday, September 13, 2009.
Visitors are more than welcome to come see the show. The show opens to the public from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Dundas Lions Memorial Community Center, 10 Market St. S., Dundas, ON L9H 5G4. We will have an auction of show blooms at 3 p.m. on Sunday, so visitors can take some beautiful bouquets home to that special person.
The bloom of the year for 2009 will be Jess-Carol - M FD Pr. Originator: Ralph Suttell.
This miniature formal decorative should have been growing in my garden for the past several years. I just didn’t ask for stock. After seeing this little beauty once again at our ‘08 show and on the garden tour, it’s on my wife’s must have colour list. -- J. Hall
Seedling Bench Scores for 05 and 06: Elkhart - 87.33. Mid Island - 87.67. Hamilton - 90.33 . An over-all average score of 88.44. Jess-Carol produces lots of blooms (size 3 3/4" X 2 3/4" on 8" stems). Even with good tuber production, we asked Ralph Suttell to grow a couple of extra plants last spring. There will be enough tubers at our April sale for those interested in growing this great little dahlia.
